The state of Ohio may seem like an obscure choice to receive a degree in supply chain management, but it’s situated at a transportation crossroads and offers many schooling opportunities for students.

Major companies with headquarters in Ohio include Procter & Gamble (P&G), Kroger, Nationwide, and Cardinal Health, allowing for many internship and career opportunities post-graduation.

The Supply Chain Industry in Ohio

As the ninth-largest exporting state in the country, Ohio encourages businesses to engage in international trade with its Export Assistance and International Engagement Program. Major commodities exported include industrial machinery, vehicles, aircraft, and electric machinery.

Trade is conducted through ports, ground transportation, and airports. Ohio’s eight commercial airports generate around $13.3 billion in total GDP each year. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport was the first municipal airport in the country and initially served as a stop for U.S. Air Mail planes. Now it handles an average of 12.4 million pounds of cargo per month as of February 2023.

The Port of Cleveland is the largest on the Great Lakes and includes a Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ), service from two Class 1 railroads, and access to major highways.

Study Supply Chain Management in Ohio

Similarly, the University of Akron has an undergraduate degree in Supply Chain and Operations Management and provides professional development through internships and senior projects involving local companies.

Tiffin University’s BBA in Supply Chain Management is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and allows students to take an accelerated pathway of dual credits toward both a BBA and an MBA.

A BSBA in Supply Chain Management at Bowling Green State University focuses on planning, sourcing, and the flow of goods, with courses such as “Ethics and Social Responsibility in Business” and “Supply Management and Global Sourcing Strategies.”

Students looking for a BS in Supply Chain Management have plenty of options in Ohio. If networking and events are important to you, consider Ohio State University’s BS in Logistics Management or the BS in Operations Management. The school offers multiple student organizations to choose from, as well as an office dedicated to leadership and engagement that assists students with development opportunities.

John Carroll University focuses on the importance of technology and data for its Supply Chain Management degree by teaching forecasting, analytics, reporting, and integrated business planning.

If an online program is necessary, Franklin University offers a 100% online bachelor of science in Operations & Supply Chain Management.

Graduate Programs

MBA programs can be found at multiple universities for students hoping to gain well-rounded expertise in business operations and practices. The University of Toledo offers an MBA with a specialization in Operations and Supply Chain Management to help working professionals and recent graduates elevate their careers. Bowling Green State University’s MBA has a specialization in Supply Chain Management with coursework focused on customers, analytics, and negotiation.
