The curriculum is divided into 21 credits of core business coursework and 9 credits in supply chain management. Students in the SCM concentration are required to take courses in Lean Six Sigma, principles of SCM, and principles & practices of SCM. “Practices” includes coverage of areas such as logistics, warehouse management, transportation, distribution, and inventory management.

Price is USI’s major selling point—this is the most affordable online MBA in our rankings. That means it also has one of the lowest debt rates for graduates. The Romain College of Business doesn’t offer a great deal in the form of networking opportunities or global experiences for online students, but this may be just fine for mid-level professionals who want to tick the MBA box on their résumé.

UNCW’s Online MBA in Supply Chain Management

Online vs. Campus-Based Supply Chain MBA Programs

Types of Delivery Methods

MBA degrees in supply chain management are available in three types of delivery methods:

  • Online: Online MBA in SCM programs can be 100% online or online with some required in-person experiences (e.g. orientation). Coursework may be offered in an asynchronous, “learn on your own time” format or a synchronous “real-time” format that involves live virtual classes and group meetings. A number of online MBA programs feature both asynchronous and synchronous elements.
  • Hybrid: Hybrid or blended MBA in SCM programs mix online coursework with on-campus classes. Universities will often try to schedule these classes in the evening and/or on the weekends in order to accommodate working professionals. In a number of cases, MBA students can select which courses they would like to take on-campus.
  • On-Campus: On-campus MBA in SCM programs will require students to attend traditional lectures and complete group projects on the campus. Courses are often scheduled during the day. On-campus students have access to business school labs, SCM research centers & student clubs, and computer labs with supply chain software. They have the flexibility to attend talks with guest speakers, visit faculty during office hours, and meet up with their classmates. And they can take full advantage of the School of Business’s recruiting events and career fairs.

Which Delivery Method is Best?

Online

An online MBA in SCM is a popular choice for mid-career professionals who have some industry experience, but wish to qualify for management or leadership roles. To that end, online MBA programs are explicitly designed to let students continue to work while they study. In some cases, employers will help to subsidize the cost of the MBA in order to ensure that their employees have the right management and practical business skills for director and C-level roles.

On-Campus or Hybrid

Students who are pivoting into a new industry, launching a company, or starting fresh in a management or consulting role often choose an on-campus or blended degree format for their MBA experience. A two-year on-campus MBA in SCM can provide invaluable career opportunities for those who lack connections. However, it does require that you put your job “on pause” while you complete the degree.

Customizing an Online MBA in SCM with Campus Elements

Although an online MBA in SCM cannot equal the community experience of a two-year, full-time MBA in supply chain management, there are ways to make a virtual degree more networking-friendly.

  • Synchronous Elements: If you’re able to attend classes virtually at specific times, look for online MBA programs that have synchronous elements. For instance, the University of Rhode Island’s Online Part-Time MBA in Supply Chain Management features live discussions and group projects.
  • Optional Campus Experiences: To foster connections, programs like Baylor University’s Online MBA in Global Trade and Supply Chain Management now offer optional residence experiences and campus immersions. These in-person experiences might feature workshops, guest speakers, day trips, and other unique elements.
  • Global Trips: A sizeable number of online MBA in SCM programs include the opportunity to travel abroad and observe executives in other countries. For example, Arizona State University’s Online MBA in Supply Chain Management can be augmented with global learning opportunities.
  • Internships: If you require additional job experience before graduating, 100% online programs like Wayne State University’s Online MBA in Global Supply Chain Management offer an internship as an SCM elective. Reputable Schools of Business will also be able to arrange internship opportunities for graduate students.
  • Team-Based Capstone Projects: A capstone project is a culminating assignment that allows MBA students to use their acquired knowledge and skills to solve a real-world problem or complex issue. Some MBA programs will ask students to work together during the capstone. For instance, Purdue University’s Online MBA in Supply Chain Strategy involves a team-based capstone simulation in which students assume cross-functional roles.

How to Choose an Online MBA in Supply Chain Management

Establish Your Career Goals

Before you select an online MBA in SCM from our rankings or directory, take a minute to articulate your career goals.

  • Early Careerists & Pivoters: Students who are early in their careers or seeking to pivot into a new industry may wish to prioritize MBA programs with synchronous elements, internships, in-person residencies, and experiential learning options embedded in the coursework.
  • Leadership Candidates: Students who wish to qualify for high-level leadership roles may be more interested in a no-nonsense accelerated program or an executive-style online MBA that allows them to network with folks at their experience level.
  • SCM Novices: Students who require a more rigorous understanding of supply chain management issues could consider earning a Dual MS/MBA degree in SCM or selecting a program such as Arizona State University’s highly customizable Online MBA in Supply Chain Management.

Check Accreditations

At a minimum, your online MBA in SCM should come from a university that is regionally accredited. This is a baseline standard of academic quality. There are six regional accrediting agencies: NWCCU, HLC, WSCUC, SACSCOC, MSCHE, and NECHE.

We also recommend that you select a School of Business that holds AACSB accreditation. This is the top-tier accreditation for business schools and an important quality marker for employers who are evaluating your MBA.

Compare the Cost vs. ROI

The cost of an MBA can vary wildly! In 2025, the University of Southern Indiana’s Online MBA in Supply Chain Management cost less than $14,000. But the price of an MBA degree from a top school like Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business might exceed $90,000. So you will need to consider your probable Return on Investment (ROI).

Before applying, see if the School of Business has posted any data on alumni incomes and average salary increases after graduation. You can also do your own research on salary data for your chosen roles (e.g. Director of Supply Chain Management). Then ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you wish to be debt-free on graduation? Or are you willing to take out loans?
  • Will you be able to recoup the cost of the MBA degree in a reasonable amount of time?
  • Can your employer help pay for your education?
  • Are you wiling to consider low-cost options from a lesser known School of Business?

Evaluate the Delivery Method

Online MBA in SCM programs are designed to accommodate working professionals. However, you will still need to gauge whether the delivery method will work for your needs. For instance:

  • A synchronous-heavy program with a lot of live classes on weeknight evenings may be impossible for someone living across the country.
  • An asynchronous program with little to no class interactions may be challenging for someone who needs to build their career network.

Ask the MBA program coordinator if it’s possible to monitor a class or preview the online delivery method. This will give you a realistic sense of the degree experience.

Consider the Time to Completion

Online MBA in SCM programs are usually offered in flexible schedules. Full-time MBA students might choose to take 3-4 classes per semester and finish within a year. Part-time MBA students may wish to elongate their plan of study over 2-3 years, taking 1-2 courses per semester.

Talk to the program coordinator and alumni before you decide on a schedule. You should know how many hours you will have to devote to each course per week.

Carefully Examine the SCM Curriculum

An MBA in SCM is not going to have the same depth as a Master of Science in SCM. So it’s important to know how much exposure you will have to supply chain issues in your MBA degree.

  • Almost all MBA programs feature a solid core of high-level business administration topics such as financial management, accounting, marketing, global strategy, and more. A fundamental course in operations & supply chain is usually included in this core.
  • The number of courses in an SCM concentration or add-on graduate certificate will change from school to school. In some cases, you may only be able to study SCM topics for three courses. However, in programs like Indiana University’s Online MBA in Supply Chain and Operations, the curriculum is evenly divided between core coursework and electives.

Look for Industry Connections & Career Support

Online MBA in SCM students have to be more proactive than on-campus students in seeking out career-building opportunities. Fortunately, many of the top schools in our rankings have:

  • SCM Centers: Dedicated SCM centers that actively support industry projects, SCM research, student-run SCM clubs, career events, SCM conferences, and student competitions.
  • Industry Partnerships: Long-established industry partnerships with domestic & global supply chain companies.
  • Advisory Boards: Experienced Advisory Boards who oversee the university’s Department of Supply Chain Management. These folks can be valuable networking contacts.
  • Career Services: Plenty of career services for online MBA students, including one-on-one coaching, job boards, mentorship, and networking events.
  • Alumni Network: A massive and well-connected alumni network.

Don’t be afraid to ask the program coordinator for statistics on job placement rates and top employers. You can also query whether any companies recruit directly from the program.

Browse Through Our Rankings & Talk to Recent Alumni

To help you save time, we’ve summarized all of these decision points in our Best Online MBA in SCM rankings. You can see—at a glance—whether the delivery method, program length, and curriculum will work for you.

Once you have a few schools on your shortlist, reach out to recent graduates of the program. The program coordinator may be able to provide you with some connections. But you can also use AI to scan LinkedIn. Almost all MBA alumni will list their alma mater on their profile.

Online MBA in Supply Chain FAQ

Should I Choose an Online MBA in SCM or an Online Master of Science in SCM?

If you wish to dive deep into supply chain management topics, you should choose an online Master of Science in SCM. This practical, industry-focused program will explore almost every aspect of supply chain management, including niche areas such as supply chain analytics and supply chain design & strategy. View our guide to the Best Online Master’s in SCM & Logistics for more information on these programs.

If you wish to qualify for senior-level management & executive leadership roles and continue working, then you should pursue an online MBA in SCM. Instead of concentrating solely on SCM issues, an MBA will give you a holistic understanding of how an entire organization functions. However, you will also need a number of years of work experience in order to apply for management roles. View our rankings or directory to compare your options.

Note: Remember that you can do both! A number of universities will allow you to complete a Dual MS/MBA program.

Do I Need to Attend a Tier 1 Business School for an Online MBA in SCM?

Tier 1 business schools are usually defined as schools that achieve a top 20-25 ranking in publications such as U.S. News & World Report, Bloomberg Businessweek, the Economist, the Financial Times, and QS World University Rankings. However:

  • In addition to having an extremely competitive admissions process, some Tier 1 business schools simply do not offer online MBA programs in supply chain management.
  • A number of Tier 2 and Tier 3 business schools have a strong vested interest in supply chain research. They support dedicated SCM centers and foster industry partnerships.

So the answer will depend on your circumstances:

  • Attending a full-time, 2-year program at a Tier 1 School of Business may be advantageous if you wish to get into management consulting or work for a major global company in a lucrative position.
  • Completing an online MBA in SCM at a Tier 2 or Tier 3 School of Business may be ideal if you’re pleased with the price of the program and you’re able to take advantage of the school’s SCM industry connections to advance your career.

Why Does the Business School’s Location Matter for an Online MBA in SCM?

When you invest your money into an online MBA in SCM program, you are paying for access to the School of Business and all of its local industry connections. Even remote students can take full advantage of these assets! For example:

  • Wayne State University is located in Detroit, Michigan. That’s why its Department of Global Supply Chain Management has close ties to automotive manufacturers, including big names such as Ford and General Motors (GM). Wayne State offers an Online MBA in Global Supply Chain Management.
  • The University of Oklahoma is located in Norman, Oklahoma. That’s why the Price College of Business has an especial interest in the aerospace and energy sectors. Aerospace is the state’s second largest and fastest-growing industry. OU offers an Online MBA with a Supply Chain Management Certificate.
  • Iowa State University is located in Des Moines, Iowa—the breadbasket of the United States. That’s why the Department of Supply Chain Management has cultivated relationships with farm-related companies such as Cargill and Caterpillar. Iowa State offers an Online Professional MBA in Supply Chain Management.

Prioritize Schools of Business and Departments of Supply Chain Management that have built up alliances with your chosen industry. This will make it much easier for you to source new job opportunities and build your career network.

Will an Online MBA in SCM Lead to New Career Opportunities and/or Salary Increases?

An online MBA in SCM can lead to new career opportunities and salary increases, but only if you are earning it at the right time in your career.

  • Job titles that require or recommend an MBA in SCM will almost always ask for a significant amount of work experience. As one SCM professional notes, having an MBA without specialized experience in SCM is redundant.
  • You will also need to build your skill sets across multiple domain areas in order to qualify for leadership roles (e.g. strategic, practical, managerial, financial, etc.). You must be able to understand the company’s “big picture”.

There are some SCM professionals who have earned an MBA early in their career and leveraged it to qualify for specialist and managerial roles. But they tend to be very proactive in networking and career-building. When in doubt, talk to industry mentors before you make a decision.
