Affordability Rankings Methodology

Award Badge for Affordable Supply Chain Degree Rankings

To identify the most affordable online supply chain degrees in the USA, we assessed more than 100 bachelor’s programs from across the country. In order to qualify for inclusion in our rankings, undergraduate degrees had to be in supply chain management, logistics, or a closely related field and be offered by a regionally accredited institution.

Once we had a list of potential programs, we manually researched the total cost of each online supply chain management and logistics degree. We assessed two key aspects of the price:

  1. Tuition Costs: Our calculations are based on a full-time, 8-semester plan of study. In our profiles, you’ll notice that many schools charge online undergraduates a simple per credit tuition rate. However, there are still a few public universities that offer a cheaper full-time rate for students who complete 15 credits per semester (e.g. 15 credits x 8 semesters = 120 credits). If the full-time rate was cheaper than the part-time rate, we chose the full-time rate for our calculations. In cases where programs had different tuition rates for in-state and out-of-state students, we opted for the out-of-state rate.
  2. Mandatory Fees: Mandatory fees such as distance education, resource, or technology fees can often add $2,000 to $6,000 in additional costs to an online bachelor’s program in SCM. These fees can be charged on a per credit or a per semester basis. To ensure you weren’t blindsided by extra costs, we have included these fees in our calculations. If the fees were charged by the semester, we used 8 semesters/4 years for our estimate. You may also need to budget for additional one-off expenses such as books & supplies and application & graduation fees.

Finally, we ranked the programs based on the total estimated program price, with the most affordable options taking the top spots in our rankings.

Additional Considerations

Keep in mind that the prices you see in our rankings reflect the minimum total cost for an online bachelor’s degree in SCM and logistics. Although schools such as CSU Global are willing to “lock in” their tuition rates for the course of the degree, many universities still raise their per credit tuition rates each year.

And while universities publish a sticker price for tuition, actual costs can fluctuate based on factors like your income, chosen program, and transfer credits. It’s also important to remember that university tuition rates don’t reflect the impact of financial aid, which can significantly reduce the overall cost of your degree.

Ultimately, while each of our 25 ranked schools represents an affordable opportunity, the most budget-friendly option for you will depend on your unique circumstances. Remember to compare these degrees with programs offered by universities in your home state, as in-state tuition often provides the most cost-effective path to earning an undergraduate degree.

Affordability FAQ

How Can I Save Money on an Online Bachelor’s in SCM and Logistics?

There are many ways to save money on an online bachelor’s degree in supply chain management or logistics. The simplest step is to go through our affordable rankings—we have unearthed 25 online undergraduate programs in SCM and logistics that cost $45,000 or less for all students, regardless of their state of residency. But there are other tricks:

  1. Opt for a competency-based program that allows you to complete your degree as quickly as you wish. The faster you go, the cheaper your total cost will be.
  2. Compare the schools in our rankings with prices at public universities within your state. Some schools offer very low tuition rates to in-state online students.
  3. Discuss transfer credits with the program coordinator. You may be able to transfer prior college credits, credits for work & military experience, and/or credits for professional certifications.
  4. Apply for financial aid & scholarships, including federal aid, state aid, and internal scholarships. Remember that scholarships will also be available from professional SCM organizations and private funding bodies.
  5. Attend a community college for the first two years and then transfer these credits to a 4-year online program or degree completion program. Community college courses are often much cheaper than university courses.

What Are Competency-Based Programs in SCM and Logistics?

Competency-based programs in supply chain management and logistics allow you to progress through the degree by mastering specific skills and knowledge. You do not have to spend a fixed number of weeks in class. As long as you can prove your competency for each subject, you can go as fast as you like. They are often called self-paced programs.

Our rankings feature three schools that offer self-paced, competency-based online undergraduate programs in SCM: University of Massachusetts Global, University of Maine at Presque Isle, and Western Governors University. These programs are typically designed for working professionals, career changers, military service members & veterans, and highly motivated learners.

Does Regional Accreditation Matter for Online Bachelor’s in SCM Degrees?

Regional accreditation is granted by bodies such as HLC, SACSCOC, and NECHE to colleges and universities. Attending a regionally accredited university ensures that:

  1. You’ll have access to federal financial aid.
  2. You’ll easily be able to transfer credits from your program to another university if you choose to switch schools.
  3. You’ll be eligible to apply for master’s and graduate certificate programs offered by regionally accredited universities.
  4. You will meet accreditation conditions that are often set by employers, licensing boards, and credential evaluators.

Because of these points, we have ensured that all of the colleges and universities in our rankings are regionally accredited. You’ll see it listed beside the bullet point for Accreditation.

Does Business School Accreditation Matter for Online Bachelor’s in SCM Degrees?

In our rankings, you’ll spot some profiles that have an additional programmatic accreditation. AACSB, ACBSP, and IACBE are three major accrediting bodies that evaluate business and management programs at colleges and universities. Here’s how they could help you in your SCM career:

  • AACSB: Focuses on research, academic rigor, faculty qualifications, and continuous improvement. This is the most prestigious accreditation for Schools of Business, so look for it if you are considering a graduate degree, enjoy research, and wish to impress employers. It’s often a requirement for jobs at Fortune 500 companies.
  • ACBSP: Focuses on teaching excellence and student outcomes rather than research. You may find it useful if you are seeking an online program that emphasizes hands-on business skills in applied or professional settings.
  • IACBE: Focuses on teaching, learning, and outcomes-based education. Like the ACBSP, this accreditation may be useful if you are looking for teaching-focused institutions and programs that focused on applied learning.

What Should I Be Looking for in an Affordable Online Bachelor’s in SCM?

We understand that the total cost of a degree will be one of the most important factors in your decision. However, apart from price, there are a number of quality markers to watch out for in our profiles of the 25 most affordable online bachelor’s degree in SCM and logistics. They include:

  • Foundational & Advanced Coursework in SCM: As an undergraduate, you will need training in the fundamental aspects of SCM and logistics (e.g. procurement, transportation, operations management, etc.). But it’s important to learn what courses and electives are being offered at the 300- and 400-level. It’s at this point that you can start to specialize in a specific area of interest (e.g. AI applications & supply chain analytics).
  • Internships: SCM and logistics are hands-on disciplines, so it’s imperative that you gain some real-world experience before you enter the job market. Always check the curriculum to see if an internship is included as a mandatory course or an elective and talk to the program coordinator about where SCM undergraduate students usually end up interning.
  • Networking Opportunities: Some of the larger and more prestigious schools in our affordable rankings run their own centers in supply chain management (e.g. UWF’s Center for Supply Chain Management Excellence). These centers may provide opportunities for research projects, internships, and conference travel, as well as connections to industry partners.
  • Certification Preparation: A number of online undergraduate programs in SCM will include prep & training for professional SCM certifications, including ASCM’s APICS credentials in Certified Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution (CLTD) and Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP). Some degrees also provide preparation for Lean Six Sigma certification and project management qualifications like the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®).
  • SCM Student Clubs & Competitions: Even though you are studying online, you can still ask to join the university’s student-run clubs and organizations in SCM (e.g. UNCG’s ISSCM student organization). This will help to shine up your résumé and connect you with career opportunities early on.
  • Accelerated Master’s Pathway: Are you thinking of graduate school later down the track? Consider programs that offer a combined online bachelor’s/master’s degree pathway. In this scenario, you may be able to take graduate-level credits in the fourth year of your undergraduate degree and then complete your master’s degree in less time than normal.
  • Job Placements for Alumni: Before submitting your application, find out where bachelor’s degree students in SCM have ended up working after graduation. The location of the college or university may be a critical factor here. For example, schools on the Eastern coastline will often have links to shipping and global transportation companies. Schools in the Midwest may have ties to trucking, train, and agricultural companies.
