The state of New York is a global supply chain hub for many industries, the newest being the offshore wind industry. As a nationwide leader in this high-tech space, New York has committed to developing 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind energy by 2035, benefiting jobs, manufacturing, infrastructure, and sustainability for New York and the country, in the years to come.

Logistically, the Port of New York and New Jersey is the largest East Coast container port and the third largest in the nation. With ample warehousing and distribution centers, the Port is one of the most productive and best-connected in the country, moving around $271 billion worth of products in 2022.

For air travel, the John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport has multiple cargo handling facilities, including the ARK (an animal handling facility), cold chain storage, and freight forwarding services. In 2022, the state also invested $8 billion into expanding LaGuardia Airport.

Undergraduate Programs

Founded in 1919, Syracuse University’s Supply Chain Management program was the first in the nation. It offers a dual enrollment program where students can select additional majors related to communications, the sciences or business leadership, or business systems. Additionally, students have the opportunity to complete a BS and JD in six years through the 3+3 Joint Degree program. SU encourages social activities (including a house cup competition) and leadership development through its IMPRESS Program.

If your goal is to eventually complete a master’s degree, Hofstra University also has a dual degree program for a BBA in Supply Chain Management and MBA.

For more networking and general business knowledge, BSBA Supply Chain Management students at Binghamton University have access to a wide selection of business-related student organizations that range from industry-specific to diversity in leadership.

Students wanting professional certifications after college, like CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) or CPIM (Certified in Planning and Inventory Management), should visit SUNY College at Plattsburgh. The Global Supply Chain Management major requires an internship, has access to the local APICS Chapter for networking, and provides technical training with the SAP University Alliance—all to prepare students for the exams.

Rochester Institute of Technology’s program is one of the select few accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International with its multidisciplinary BS in Supply Chain Management degree.

The University of Buffalo also offers a full-time MBA program, the only STEM MBA in SUNY.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has a Center for Supply Networks and Analytics for research to support their STEM-designated Supply Chain Management MS. Fashion enthusiasts can specialize at LIM College, which offers an MPS in Global Fashion Supply Chain Management.

And for those students looking to be thought leaders in the supply chain industry, Cornell, NYU, and Syracuse all offer PhD programs.

Three main options for certificates are available through New York universities.
