Michigan is one of the top states for students to earn a degree in supply chain management. With a wide array of business development programs and infrastructure improvements, it is one of the top-ten employers for new graduates. The state prides itself on developing high-quality talent, so there are plenty of supply chain management programs to choose from.

Multiple universities partner with businesses for curriculum development, lectures, and internship opportunities to prepare students for real-world supply chain scenarios. Not only that, many of the programs are nationally ranked, offering an additional competitive advantage.

Continue reading to learn about the state’s supply chain industry, educational opportunities, and a list of available supply chain programs in Michigan.

The Supply Chain Industry in Michigan

Michigan is home to North America’s most active border crossing, accounting for 25% of annual trade between the U.S. and Canada. The local supply chain revolves around 33 deep water ports on Lake Michigan, 26 freight railroads, and 18 commercial airports, including the Detroit Metro Airport.

To stay on top of supply chain efficiency, the state has dedicated $6.3 billion to infrastructure improvements. The combination of investing in the local economy plus well-educated supply-chain talent attracts large businesses from multiple industries, including automotive manufacturing, tech, and engineering.

Study Supply Chain Management in Michigan

Students of any level can’t go wrong with Michigan State University. Ranked as the nation’s #1 supply chain management program, the university has an impressive array of supply chain management offerings:

  • BA in Supply Chain Management
  • MS in Supply Chain Management

Backed by extensive research, each program teaches students to make strategic improvements, mitigate risks, and limit costs within the supply chain.

The Department of Supply Chain Management includes a team of 40 individuals and contains the Supply Chain Management Council, which partners with organizations to lecture, develop, and recruit MSU students. Additionally, the Corporate and Student Relations Office assists students seeking internships, co-ops, and employment through corporate contacts and career development. Undergraduates can join the MSU Supply Chain Management Association for networking, volunteering, and other opportunities.

While Michigan State University is a well-known supply chain school, there are numerous other programs in the state to fit various needs.

Undergraduate Programs

Not to be outdone, Western Michigan University is also a top-ranked school for supply chain management because of its robust Bachelor’s in Integrated Supply Chain Management curriculum.

Meanwhile, Adrian College developed its BBA in Supply Chain Management curriculum with Ryder (one of the nation’s top logistics brands), 20+ companies, and two Fortune 500 companies to ensure students are well-equipped to face real-world supply chain problems.

For networking opportunities, Central Michigan University students can earn a bachelor’s degree in Purchasing and Supply Management or Logistics Management and have access to multiple business organizations, including the Logistics Management Council Honor Society and the Supply Chain Management Association.

As the only STEM-designated program in Michigan, Saginaw Valley’s BBA in Supply Chain Management allows students to use professional tools that prepare them for internships and careers in a variety of industries.

Graduate Programs

While Michigan State is the only university to offer PhD programs in the state, plenty of other universities offer unique graduate programs related to supply chain management.

The University of Michigan has a Master of Supply Chain Management at the Ann Arbor campus and an MS in Supply Chain Management at the Dearborn campus. The university also offers an online MBA with concentrations in Supply Chain Management or Business Analytics.

For industry-specific options, students should explore Wayne State University, which offers an Executive Master of Science in Automotive Supply Chain Management and an online MBA in Healthcare Supply Chain Management or Global Supply Chain Management.

Certificates/Continuing Education

Beyond Michigan State’s extensive list of certificates, students can find opportunities at a few other universities.
